Frequently Asked Questions

What does ITF stand for?
ITF stands for International Taekwon-Do Federation. The federation was established by Grandmaster General Choi Hong Hi who is considered to be "the father" of modern Taekwon-Do. ITF style is often referred as Traditional Taekwon-Do.

Why is the word Taekwon-Do spelled differently by different Taekwon-Do schools? Examples: Tae Kwon Do or Taekwondo?
Different Taekwon-Do schools spell it differently but the meaning is the same - the art of kicking and punching. The spelling "Taekwon-Do" was used by Grandmaster General Choi Hong Hi and is used by most ITF affiliated Taekwon-Do schools.

What is the difference between Taekwon-Do and Karate?
Taekwon-Do originated in Korea. All terminology is in the Korean language. Karate originated in Japan. The basic punching and kicking techniques are pretty much the same, however, the forms and sparring rules are completely different. Also, there is more kicking than punching in Taekwon-Do compared to Karate.

What is the belt system in ITF Taekwon-Do?
The colors of the belts are white, yellow, green, blue, red and black. There are also steps between solid colors defined by the higher belt's color stripe. Examples: white belt with yellow stripe, yellow belt with green stripe, etc. After the red belt with a black stripe you test for Black Belt 1st Dan. There are 9 levels in the black belt system, so the highest level is Black Belt 9th Dan.

Taekwon-Do is an excellent workout. It also allows you to improve flexibility, balance and coordination.
